Summary/Abstract: Green volcanic od stones are crucial construction materials and it was excavated widely in Turkey. Od stone was used rarely in Late Roman, Early Byzantium (4-6th centuries) and Early Ottoman periods (16-18th centuries). It was used more at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The stones that were used in İstanbul were delivered from the quarries around Karamürsel. There is little information in early period resources. However, there are many on the uses of Karamürsel Od stone in the construction and restoration of buildings in İstanbul between the second half of the18th century and the 19th century. For that reason, there are some information on the Karamürsel Od stone factory, its organization, the features of the stone (like its excavation, preparation, size, price), factors affecting the price, its transportation to İstanbul and its usage in construction. According to that information, some shops, khans, furnaces, houses, palaces, kitchens, and mosques were either constructed or restored with Karamürsel Od stones. The production and transportation of the stone were laborious. The organization of the production and transportation were also problematic. This article focuses on those problems.
