Summary/Abstract: The Polish Armed Forces are one of the pillars of security of the country. Currently, Poland, as a Member State of both NATO and the European Union, might be required to engage soldiers in defence against a military threat. The primary role of the armed forces is to perform actions aimed at the preservation of security, but also to prevent potentially menacing situations, both home and abroad. All activities must comply with the strategy of the North Atlantic Treaty. The development of civilization, technological progress, as well as the progressive globalisation of the contemporary world all lead to changes in the scale and nature of threats. The aim of the article is the analysis of the participation of the Polish Armed Forces in NATO and in the whole system of the European Union. The author tries to recommend the changes which should be implemented in order to improve the system with regards to the scope of the use of armed forces in crisis situations.
