Summary/Abstract: The goal of the article is assessment of attractiveness of large cities with respect to the development of the marketplace trade. Because there are numerous social and economic advantages of this traditional form of trade, some communes take actions supporting the activity of marketplaces because their existence positively influences the local labour market and the development of entrepreneurship. In last years the new threats for the development of marketplaces originated, such as cheap discount stores, super- and hypermarkets and Internet stores. Because of this, the area of marketplaces decreased. However, inhabitants of large cities in particular still willingly go shopping to traditional marketplaces. In order to distinguish cities with the most and least propitious conditions of development of this trade form, the Hellwig’s method of linear ordering was applied. The data from the Local Data Bank of the Central Statistical Office was used.
