Summary/Abstract: The pride of one of Odesa’s private collections is a pair of fne decorative porcelain plates with images of exotic birds. Tey were created in Paris at the manufactory of Rihouet (circa 1840–1850). Images are made on plates in the technique of hand overglaze painting. Reverse sides showing the mark: Rihouet á Paris. Founder of manufactory Louis Marie Francois Rihouet was born in 1791. In 1824 Rihouet obtained the title of Royal faiencier. The application of ornithomorphic images on works of decorative and applied art in Europe by that time already became a tradition that had Far Eastern origins. The article examines numerous examples of the use of images of birds in artistic porcelain of different countries of Europe, as well of China and Japan. The outstanding value of the richly illustrated works of French ornithologists of the late 18th – first half of 19th century and their influence upon the development of decorative and applied art is noted. For the first time into the scientific circulation unique artifacts are introduced. These plates once belonged to the French consul in Odesa, representative of the Entente. Considered a pair of decorative plates is a characteristic product of the Balzac epoch in French culture.
