Summary/Abstract: A documentary and a romantic of his time, sculptor Lazar Dubinovsky (born on May 1, 1910, in Falesti – died on November 29, 1982, in Chisinau) created portraits mainly in an easel sculpture. The sculptor showed himself in the period of strict principles of socialist realism in art. He began his professional career at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where Dimitrie Pachurea and Oscar Khan were his teachers. His creation is also influenced by Antoine Bourdelle, in whose studio he studied in Paris. From 1951 to 1953 Lazar Dubinovsky worked in the studio of the famous sculptor-monumentalist E. Vuchetich in Moscow. Chronologically, his portraits could be divided into four stages: the portraits of the 1940s, created in the best traditions of the Romanian school of sculpture; portraits of the 1950s, in which the documentarism prevailed; portraits of the 1960s with romantic and realistic orientation at the same time; and, the apogee of his works the portraits of the 1970s, in which the stylistic diversity is noticed from one work to another. The sculptor experimented during his entire period of creation and this led to a great variation of approaches. The sculptor left a rich artistic heritage, the value of which has become a current issue for arts critic’s research.
