Summary/Abstract: The compared analysis, by the aforementioned criteria, of Al Qaida and the Islamic State logically leads to the conclusion that, at present, IS does not represent an alternative to AQ and cannot claim the leading role within the jihadist network. Although it is very active operationally, both locally / regionally and as the main source of threat to Europe’s security, the Islamic State lacks two decisive dimensions for it to claim global leadership of the jihadists: acknowledgement of the role of leader by other terrorist organizations, by their affiliation; doctrinal / ideological support, around which these organizations could gather.
