Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the situation of the blacks in the United States in four spheres: the economy, education, family, and crime. The African Americans tend to be poorer, less educated and with higher levels of imprisonment then whites and other ethnic and racial groups. This could be explained with vestiges of racial discrimination but in addition to this, American blacks in inner cities have developed cultural traits (oppositional culture that rejects values of education and career, glorification of violence, acceptance of the model of single-parent family) that have contributed to their plight.
