Summary/Abstract: The fall of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe radically transformed the global and European security environment. The end of the security and defense system of the Communist bloc has created a major imbalance, leaving the United States in the new unipolar world without the main enemies personified by the Warsaw Pact states. These new developments have also made major changes in the security and defense architecture of the Extensive Black Sea Region. The Black Sea is a meeting place for the interests of both the riparian countries and the various international actors. The geopolitical and security developments in the Black Sea region, the geographic position of the region, the risks and threats to stability in the area, the elements of political, economic and military cooperation are issues that are increasingly attracting the interest of European and transatlantic organizations, generating a closer approach to the issue of the area. The beginning of the 21st century gives this space, in the context of new Euro-Atlantic geopolitical and geostrategic realities, the characteristics of a NATO and EU proximity space.
