Summary/Abstract: People in Bulgaria are very sensitive not only on the issue of their national independence, but also on the issue of religious freedom. That is one of the reasons why this issue has become subject-matter of the legislation under the first Bulgarian Constitution – the so called Tarnovo Constitution. The legal regulation regarding religious issues in the Third Bulgarian State is enshrined in the provisions of the Tarnovo Constitution, namely in its Chapter IX “Faith”. The regulation concerns some basic questions, such as: the leading role of Eastern Orthodoxy, the rights of other faiths, the faith of the first monarch and the relations between the Bulgarian Exarchate beyond state borders, and institutions within the Principality of Bulgaria.
