Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the main developments and tendencies in theory and research of the self both in psychological social psychology and in sociological social psychology. It is stressed that the writings of Mead, Cooley and the early interactionists have provided the theoretical basis of the continuing research interest in the self and self-related phenomena in sociological social psychology. On the other hand, in psychological social psychology, as well in psychological science in general, this interest has lacked in continuity. In recent years, however, the self has become one of the central research topics in this discipline of psychology. The author suggests that it is a consequence of the fruitful development of modern cognitive psychology, as well as of increased approximation of social psychology and personality psychology.
