Summary/Abstract: Autobiographical memory is a major form of human memory and a basis of most psychotherapeutic methods. In some views, it is the source of the concept of self, as well the concept of identity. The purpose of this article is to provide a concise survey of the contemporary work in the cognitive psychology of autobiographical memory which reasonably emphasizes a special role of the concept of self in this kind of memory. The paper considers the problem of definition of this concept and gives a brief description of the characteristic topics in this area of psychological research. A special attention is focused on the process of schematization of our self-knowledge that leads to the conceptual organization and storage in memory of everyday self-referenced information. Finally, the paper traces the roots of modern understanding of autobiographical memory back to Bartlett's early viewpoint that memory is much more often a reconstruction than a reproduction.
