THE CONCEPTS OF ANDROGYNY AND FAMILY ROLES

Summary/Abstract: On the basis of theoretical discussions and empirical investigations the author has analysed the concept of androgyny which, in accordance with the traditional conceptions, represents a type of gender role that preserves the balance between positive masculine and feminine characteristics. Although many previous studies underline the positive aspects of androgyny, it has transpired that, depending on some specific variables that are part and parcel of studies of androgyny, the obtained results vary and are not always coherent. Apart from the individual plane of investigation, the concept of androgyny has been treated within a broader context of familial functioning, most notably parental functioning.
