Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present and assess the role of the market and market mechanisms in devising a sustainable development olicy. The idea of sustainable development was a reaction to market errors. International documents and declarations do not indicate the role of the market in sustainable development. The market is the environment of all activities shaping development. An appropriately shaped market and market mechanisms and instruments can foster the implementation of sustainable development. The general policy of sustainable development created by the state does not use market and its mechanisms. The appropriate place for them are three horizontal policies: economic, social and environmental. The article indicates actions for and limitations to their market orientation towards sustainable development. The application scope of market-based instruments under the policy is also a determinant of policy marketisation.
