Breaking into the 21st century: manifestations of innovative hotel architecture

Summary/Abstract: The rapid innovative development of hotel industry at the beginning of the 21st century makes hotels a fertile ground for studying the approaches and stylistic tendencies in current architecture worldwide. The paper explores the driving forces of hotel architecture for the last two decades and their manifestations in the avant-garde hotel philosophy, goals, content and appearance. It is argued that three general strategies guide the hotel metamorphosis and inspire a system of new design principles that upgrade the common conventions of Modern and Postmodern architecture. Examples of creative hotel identities and leitmotivs are derived. The emerging new hotel types are also outlined that reinvent the notion of a “hotel”.
