Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes both the sources and the factors of the conflict between „the social” and „the spatial” in the contemporary built environment. The conflict results in increasing residential discomfort. The traditional architectural design and urban planning are materializations of historically improved and unchanged in time „protodesigns”. As, after the industrial revolution, the socio-spatial systems become objects of architectural design (urban planning) this approach is not relevant anymore. The article suggests a social interpretation of the contradiction between the new design object and the principles architects try to use in creating it. Several general factors causing this contradiction are outlined. The first one, called „right questions — wrong answers”, examines the gap between the social aims architect poses to himself and their „translation” into particular architecture (urban) fragments. The second one, „the robot-person”, analyzes the clash between the real dweller and the abstract person-model implanted in the design. The third one, „the mistake of the genius”, explores the problems caused by the multiplying of the „top” architectural (urban) objects and principles without concidering the cultural and social peculiarities of the new environment. The fourth one, „remote designing”, examines the negative results of the lack of social information both at „the entrance” and at „the exit” of the design process. The fifth one, „the non-existing architect” analyzes the interrelations between the social role „architect” and the real function of the architect in the contemporary society.
