Summary/Abstract: In the pre-digital era of publishing, making profits via cost reductions was determined mainly by so-called ‘economies of scale’. In the digital environment publishers must develop new business models. New print technologies (printing on demand) became available which allow printing at reasonable costs for low quantities. Digital technology has led to an environment where content may be distributed without any printer, when copies are only distributed in digital form. Essential become content aggregation and the development of an appropriate platform infrastructure. Prior to digitalisation, it would have been prohibitively expensive for most authors to bypass publishers through self-publishing. This has changed with the arrival of the e-book and e-book readers. The term ‘copyright’ means more than a system of protecting creative works against unauthorized copying. Free and pluralist press is one of the cornerstones of democratic societies. To ensure the survival of quality journalism, it is of utmost importance to support the transition to new business models.
