Summary/Abstract: The topicality of Benito Pérez Galdós is undeniable. First, his work has a priceless value as a historical source, since the distinguished writer introduces in his stories historical, political and anthropological elements, describing the life of the Spanish people with a great precision. Despite the almost one hundred years which have passed from his death, he is very up-to-the-minute because in his novels he deals with eternal themes, which will continue to be the same till the end of the world. He speaks about feelings and experience, which do not change like fashion does. The memory and the oblivion have a remarkable role in Fortunata and Jacinta, since Juan Santa Cruz recovers Fortunata again and again from the bottom of his memory, and despite of being married to Jacinta, he does not forget her, nor does he leave her move away, until he destroys her life. The memory is blending with the wish and with certain remorse, which are torturing the hero without stopping. The meanders of memory and oblivion are no doubt the foundations of the novel.
