Cognitive characteristics related to driving

Summary/Abstract: The study provides a detailed analysis of the theoretical and empirical studies that examine the cognitive characteristics related to driving. The purpose of the analysis is to distinguish those characteristics that influence the ability to drive. The rewiew of the literature reveals the following cognitive processes and behavioural patterns as cruicial for aptitude to drive: attention, memory, visual spatial orientation, executive functions, praxis functions and language. The results of the analysis shows that these characteristics are related to safe driving on one hand and to the overall performance of the driver on the road on other hand. These results can contribute for development of a complex method for measurement of those characteristics that distinguish the drivers whose cognitive functioning is risky for the traffic. In addition, the results can be used as a basis for establishment of educational programs for prevention of risky driving.
