Summary/Abstract: The article presents an overview of the previous literature on the phenomenon of social ostracism in the context of the workplace. There were indicated elements differentiating ostracism from other negative behaviors in the workplace such as deviant behavior, aggression, anti-social behavior, dysfunctional, counterproductive or mobbing. Next, the subjective and organizational determinants of the phenomenon are presented. Particular emphasis was placed on describing the negative consequences of the ostracism experience at the individual and organizational level, such as increased negative emotions, lower individual well-being, frustration of basic needs, negative attitude towards colleagues and superiors, feeling lower satisfaction from work, or lower commitment to work. Conclusions suggesting its positive effects were established. In the final remarks, the emphasis was put on suggestions regarding the prevention of ostracism in the workplace and future interventions in this area.
