a basic comparison of news formats

Summary/Abstract: The paper applies the theory and methods of the analysis of news formats, originated by Altheide and Snow, to sports in television news. In the theoretical part, the concept of news format is defined and the possibilities of its linking to domestic tradition of genre theory are outlined. In the second part, the preliminary results of the ongoing qualitative analysis of sport news’ formatting in main newscasts are presented, based on the data from two Slovak national TV channels, public-service RTVS and private TV JOJ. It seems that while the RTVS tends to link sports to the other social institutions (e.g., politics, education, health), TV JOJ frames it more personally and emotionally. However, both TV channels frequently use the disharmonic “risk frame” in their news reports.
