Summary/Abstract: Starting from the geopolitical consequences of the Great War, the paper analyses the different historical types of union in Europe. The author mainly focuses upon a linguistic aspect: the uses, in this context, of the verb to unite [Fr. (s')unir, Ro. a (se) uni, Ger. einigen, vereinen, (sich) vereinigen (and their lexical families)] and of the numeral one [un (Fr.), unu (Ro.), ein (Ger.)], important for the signification of the structures in which they appear and for their cultural references.
