Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the core values underlying contemporary European civilization, starting from their historical roots (Greek philosophy, Roman law, Christian values, the medieval code of chivalry and courtly love, rationalism and experimentalism). Also reviewed are the basic concepts of security, freedom, equality, property and social welfare. The author continues with a survey of the main texts devoted to human rights, from the writings of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas to documents such as the Constitutions of France and Romania, the European Convention on Human Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration des droits de l’homme et du Citoyen, etc.
