Pronominal Anaphora: Referential Ambiguity and Coherence & Inconsistency Effects in Classical French

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we study the repository operation of anaphoric pronouns in classical texts. This issue is undeniably important given that modern French assigns an anaphoric pronoun to its own history generally unproblematic repository order. However,our close analysis of anaphoric relations within the texts of the classical period indicated that the attachment of an expression anaphoric pronoun to its own history is mainly based on a strictly localizing approach, and that the term recovery refers to the closest referent despite the presence of other salient referents, compatible in gender and number with the ambiguous anaphoric pronoun. Our study of pronominal anaphora in classical French is based precisely on this observation. We will try mainly to focus on the limits of the textual approach to anaphora and we will propose a set of modern approaches, both syntactic and cognitive, to restrict referential ambiguities generated by a free handling of pronominal anaphoric expressions in classical texts.
