Summary/Abstract: Regional development is one of the more frequently-studied research issues. Due to its multidimen-sional and complex character and the lack of direct measurement, researchers in the areas of regional development have adopted a number of substantive and formal assumptions. The purpose of the article is to determine whether and possibly how much impact on the final results of regional devel-opment studies has been made to select diagnostic variables. The analysis is accompanied by the following research hypothesis: the selection of determinants of socio-economic development has a significant impact on the results obtained, characterising the level of development of the regions examined.
