Summary/Abstract: The study analyses Slovak translation of a Hungarian novel: Helping Verbs of the Heart/ A szív segédigéi (1985)/ Pomocné slovesá srdca/ (translated by: Juliana Szolnokiová, 2009) by P. Esterházy. It is based on the categories of expression like subjectivity, authenticity, expressivity, intertextuality, provocativeness, and even vulgarity. These represent the key components of the analysed Esterházy´s text, as well as the uncommon means of expressing the author´s pain of losing his mother. The author of the study considers category of expression to be the minimal translation unit in a literary text (Miko 1970, Popovič 1975). Has Slovak translation succeeded in transferring particularity of the original text? Has the translator preserved the author´s idiolect in the outlined expressional range? The minor topic the paper also discusses is intersemiotic translation (film adaptation).
