Summary/Abstract: Turkey-European Union (EU) relations have always been bumpy since the beginning. Nevertheless, the legal status of Turkey has always risen in these relations. However, developments in Europe and Turkey and relations with the international conjuncture tend to turn into a kind of interest relationship today. In Turkey-EU relations, the Customs Union has become an interim target, such as getting a status of candidacy and starting negotiations. But today there is no concrete target other than full membership. In the past, European left and liberal parties, playing a pivotal role in the progress of Turkey's membership perspective, lost ground against conservative populism, which was not warmly welcoming for Ankara's membership. When the EU, which is a peace project, pushed the war winds to the background due to the international conjuncture, Turkey's membership perspective got darker.
