Summary/Abstract: Studying the alternative media and their alternative view of the August 1968 we are entering the land that is easy to explore but difficult to go over. We are trying to characterize environment that is heterogeneous with its own dynamics and dialectics reflected in established image of August 1968. Expert debate of major historical events is desirable and the new media are the ideal forum for discussion. It is only for the benefit if such a debate outgrows the framework of expert debate and becomes the theme resonating with the whole society. But the alternative view of August 1968 does not have such an ambition. On the contrary it brings simplifications, abbreviations, misinterpretations and concealment of some facts. However, it is the ideal material for case studies. On some selected aspects of the alternative media approach to August 1968, we can demonstrate the usual approach of these media to major historical events, explore their work with facts, and confront the production of these media with demands laid on newspapering by journalism. Within a half of the century a new generations have grown up. Generations who do not remember events of 1968. Our awareness of this part of Czech and Slovak history is formed through the mass media. If there is something like a collective memory, it is desirable not to be distorted by cynical attempts to falsify history.
