Before we cover Vrutky incident and similar tragedies

Summary/Abstract: On June 11, 2020, a young man armed with a knife committed a stabbing spree at a school in the Slovak town of Vrútky. The perpetrator killed one man and injured five, including two pupils. Also, two police officers suffered injuries during the subsequent police action. We deem this incident, widely covered by mass media, as an opportunity to discuss the ways the mass-media report on this kind of tragedies and portray perpetrators as well as victims. What do we, as journalists, really know about the attack? And more importantly: What do we need to know before we decide to cover this kind of crime?
