Summary/Abstract: The much-debated post-1989 political transition was accompanied by a parallel technological transformation exemplified by the establishment of the Internet in Bulgaria. This ‘other’ transition draws upon the heritage of pre-1989 computer-production and electronic elites, while forming its own environment after a dramatic shift. The history of the Internet in Bulgaria is part of the regroupings in the IT sector. The main actors are Internet pioneers, emerging business interests, hackers and just ordinary users. Together they form the economic and cultural milieu of the Bulgarian Internet scene. One of the key characteristics of this process is the difficult coexistence of several controversial tendencies.
