Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the use of lexicographical sources in the research of the 19th century legal terminology. The aim of the study is to find out whether the authors of 19th century dictionaries used legal documents from the times of the Duchy of Warsaw and Kingdom of Poland. If so, it would mean that the old lexicography documented undergoing changes of the semantics of terms and frequency of their use. Another aim was to assess the usefulness of dictionaries as the source of information on old legal lexis. The authors demonstrate that the old dictionaries are not a fully reliable source in the description of the then unstable legal terminology because of their compilation nature; therefore, researchers have to refer to specific texts, including those ones.
