Summary/Abstract: The letters that Bohumil Markalous addressed to his friend Karel Hradecký between 1914 and 1918 allow us to glimpse the writer’s private life and also reveal the space that literature gradually came to occupy in it. The war exposed the author to traumatic experience, however, it also afforded him time for undisturbed literary work. The publication of this as yet unpublished correspondence comprising of 23 items is accompanied by a literary study depicting the circumstances of both the writer and the recipient of the letters and offering some detailed insights into the birth of the author Jaromír John.
