Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to identify the grotesque elements of Michel de Ghelderode’s drama, arguing that the author inserts both popular, medieval aspects and modern ones. His target is to wreck the cliches used by a humanity that seems to fail to rebuild the unity of the self and hides under the veil of bashfulness. Moreover, the study will point out that the characters of Ghelderode’s plays are similar to puppets used to evince human patterns, but also the residual that characterises humankind.
