Summary/Abstract: This article considers the role that oral poetry and the folk tradition had in Slamnig’s works (his poetry, prose writings, and radio plays). It also discusses his theoretical research into the oral tradition. The essay argues that these two aspects of his work are complementary, since in Slamnig’s own work we can trace the influence of oral poetry (often in a caricatured form) which is the result of his insight into the folk tradition. The questions that concern him in his study of oral poetry are versification, Mediterranean contexts, folk creativity based on the everyday experience, and the relationship between ’high’ and’low’. These questions are also central to his creative writing.
