Legal Translation: An Issue of Compared Law

Summary/Abstract: This article aims at analysing the linguistic structures of European law by presenting the translation techniques and strategies used by translators who, besides understanding the source text and rendering it in the target language, must also cover the compulsory step of comparing the two legal systems involved in the translation. As work tools, we shall use a comparative analysis of the two versions (English / French) of the Treaty on the European Union Civil Service Tribunal. Our analysis will thus emphasize the national aspect of European law, which is in full accordance with the legal culture of each legal system.
