Summary/Abstract: Two of the oldest crafts in the Arad County were ”sumănăritul” (tailoring robes made of home woven wool) and “cojocăritul” (tailoring sleeveless coats made of sheepskin), and for those crafts taxes were already paid during the first half of the eighteenth century. The robes made of home woven wool and the sleeveless coats made of sheepskin, manufactured by these craftsmen, were pieces of winter clothing, worn by both men and women, who could not miss from rural wardrobe. The working day clothing was simple, but those for holidays, when the people went to church or to dance, were richly ornamented. These woolen robes and the sheepskin coats were produced by generations of local craftsmen, whom they find mentioned in documents in all ethnographic areas of the Arad County (White-Cris Valley, Zarand Country, Arad Vineyard, The Plain of Arad and the Mureş Valley). Differences between woolen robes and coats produced in one area or another, are visible both in the way they were cut and their length and the ornament, each area having different models, which have been preserved and were passed from one master to another, from one generation to another. Both crafts have declined since the early 1960-70, due to the urbanization and the changing of the rural clothes in favor of urban fashion. Today in Arad County there is no longer any tailor of woolen robes and only few coats furriers who are working simple, without ornament. The old coats and woolen robes made for holidays, which were purchased from the villages by the band dancers, are used only during the stage performances.
