A 16th Century Manuscript Translation of the History of Bel and the Dragon

Summary/Abstract: Bound to the volume of Calvin’s Commentary on Daniel (Praelectiones in librum prophetiarum Danieli, Genevae, M. D. LXI.), an ex tempora manuscript translation of Bel and the Dragon into Hungarian has survived in the library of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District, Debrecen, dated about 1570. So far it was unpublished. The owner of the volume Valentinus Szikszai Hellopoeus (about 1540–1575), who had studied in Wittenberg, became a famous preacher, acting also as superintendent. This translation may have been intended to be read aloud during the service, and being followed by a sermon against idolatry, it was attached to the text as a concluding Amen. In Szikszai’s lifetime a complete Hungarian Bible translation was not yet published. A thorough textual comparison reveals that this deutero-canonical history, not commented by Calvin, had been translated from Theodotion’s Latin version and not from the Greek text of LXX.
