Summary/Abstract: Starting from some theoretical aspects regarding hypothetical meaning, the present paperfocuses on a series of relevant hypothetical constructions used in English and their correspondingstructures in Italian with the aim of identifying formal and semantic similarities between thesestructures in the two languages envisaged. Moreover, reference is made to a series of structures inwhich the English Subjunctive and the Italian ‘congiuntivo’ express theoretical meaning with the aimof proving that the formal and semantic aspects shared by these two languages may facilitate thebetter understanding and correct use of both hypothetical and theoretical constructions by Englishlearners who study Italian and vice versa.
