Summary/Abstract: Almost all of Merton’s poetry celebrates relationship and the mysterious unity of creation, which resonates with today’s widening demand for environmental stewardship. No longer marginalized, this concern now manifests itself in an increasing body of literature across denominations, from the evangelical call for “creation care” to the Vatican’s recent declaration that environmental irresponsibility is a sin. As is the case with many social and political topics, Merton, over fifty years ago, was ahead of his time in his embrace of this issue. His personal, creative, and theological writings all manifest an ecological conscience often at odds with the times in which he lived and wrote. Many of Merton’s poems are so prophetic in their “greenness” that they justify the new and timely label of “ecopoetry”.
