Summary/Abstract: Petar Petrov (b. 1961) is an author who, throughout his entire creative process, combines skillfully the traditional with the contemporary, the national with the universal, by means of specific intonation and rhythmic formulas. In his piece “Dialogues with Silence” for clarinet and violoncello (a cyclic work in five parts, built with a markedly polyphonic means) these trends appear already as a completely formed musical language. One important personage intervenes in the dialogue – the pause – as an artful protagonist of Silence. The three canons (Movements II, III and IV) have exactly the same duration as the framing movements (first and last) – Thesis and Antithesis. “Dialogues with Silence” is doubtlessly one of the most original and subtle works in the treasury of Bulgarian chamber music. Performers must uphold the composer’s creative stand, and without any extrovert means must share his quiet, inward “auto-dialogue”.
