Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the text-forming resource that sets up a relationship between words and phrases, especially the relation of substitution. The substitute item appears to be “a carrier” of some information that differentiates the case of its occurrence from the other case to which it relates by cohesion. Since substitution operates at three levels there are three types of substitution. My analysis aims at characterizing clausal substitution in English and its mechanism of operation.
