Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to consider the consequences of cultural transformations related to limiting the impact of books as the dominant medium of social communication. The analysis assumes that books as cultural artifacts have contributed to the shaping of culture and that the fact that books have become a secondary medium in social communication causes changes in various aspects of human life. The analysis is of theoretical nature and it makes it possible to formulate some predictions about the future, which, on the one hand, may turn out helpful in developing competences that might, in time, be needed. On the other hand, the analysis in question may prove useful in understanding certain cultural trends and counteracting them. Implementation of the project thus outlined requires, firstly, a reference to some theoretical tradition that will help identify significant dependencies and, secondly, determining a more detailed problem scope.
