Summary/Abstract: From anxiety to phobia and back. A psychoanalytical perspective. The author aims to approach a very debated chapter in the psychiatric and psychotherapeutical theories and practices, that of the relationship between anguish, synonym of anxiety, and phobia. Starting with the philosophical concept of anguish, as initially defined by Kierkegaard and, then, by Heidegger, he insists on the indeterminate nature of the anguish and the paradox that its specific act of incorporating the nothing presumes. By analogy, its “purpose” would be then Lacan’s object a, just as indeterminate, which intervenes in a decisive way both in the configuration of desire, and that of phobia, its intermediary stage.
