Keywords: relativism; Michel de Montaigne; Tzvetan Todorov.
Summary/Abstract: Relativism frightens Europeans, because it challenges the values of each epoch and culture, including the notions of Good and Bad. Nothing is absolute, everything is relative, depending on the moral codes of the respective culture. In order to analyze “relativism” and the fear of this concept, the author comments on the essay “On Cannibals” by Montaigne, considered a manifest of modern relativism. The author adds to Montaigne’s comparisons (between barbarians and the inhabitants of the so-called civilized world) references to concrete facts of our time.
