Summary/Abstract: The 19th century witnessed not only expansion of state, municipal and communal construction, but also private public building. Banks, shopping arcades, hotels, and department stores were the temples of new civilization, which obeyed the laws of commerce in Salonika. Their functions dictated the adoption of new construction methods, while the use of the steel framework became widespread. New building types were introduced and the prevailing eclecticism was reflected in the facades of the new structures that attempted to express their innovating role through the variety of styles that they adopted. One of the city’s most important banks, the Bank of Salonika, was designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli.
