Summary/Abstract: The personal life and the professional activities of the Bulgarian revival teacher Veselin Gruev (1838 – 1867) have not been the subject of scientific research until now. For this reason, in the article, a biographical reconstruction has been done, based on available archive and print sources. The public affairs of Veselin Gruev are described in the context of social development of four Bulgarian settlements – Koprivshtitza, Klisura, Plovdiv and Sofia. His contribution to the modernization of school work during the 1860s is characterized as essential and significant. Some leading personal qualities of Veselin Gruev are also highlighted – studiousness, perseverance, allegiance to the national ideal. An assumption has been made that if his life had not been interrupted so early, Veselin Gruev would do many more useful things for the Bulgarian citizen society.
