Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a causal-effect econometric model explaining changes in life expectancy at birth in three variants: for males, females, and for the both. The empirical analysis is preceded by a survey of literature, with emphasis given to outcomes of other applied research. A list of various socio-economic and behavioral factors, possibly influencing life expectancy, is presented. Step-wise regression technique is used to arrive at the final versions of the regression equations, and a rigorous statistical verification follows. It appears from the results obtained that the following variables significantly affect life expectancy in Poland within the sample period (1970–2005): urbanization, health care, human capital, income, economic inequality, social capital, life styles, and natural environment. However, their relative impact on life expectancy differs substantially according to sex.
