Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze the German electoral system to Bundestag as well as the results of the federal elections that took place on 27th September 2009. The results set up several records: e.g. the lowest turnout since 1949, the worst results for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the historically highest support of smaller parties such as the Free Democrats (FDP), the Greens and the Left Party. Although there was no clear consensus in some of the basic topics, such as tax policy and citizen rights, the coalition as formed with the CDU/CSU and FDP. There are still big differences between the “East” and the “West” Germany, especially regarding the left side of the political spectrum. The Left Party has become the dominant power on the left side in the “East” Germany; Social Democratic Party is still dominant in the “West” but faces a strong outflow of voters.
