Summary/Abstract: The name Dii in the vernacular of the Wallachian population in the region of Vidin originates from the dialectal Bulgarian name of Vidin - (B)Din' deriving from BDNI', borrowed from the language of the local Bulgarian population. The form Din with variant Dim and their derivatives have been preserved in folk songs and toponyms. The form of the name *Din' had palatal final consonant -n', the result of a new process of palatalization of consonants in the end of the words, appearing in the Bulgarian language under the Balkan, mostly Turkish lexical influence after the 14th century. As a result of the natural transition of n' to i. which began to take place in the Romanian language after the 15th century, the Bulgarian *Din' developed into the Wallachian Dii. This comes to show that the borrowing of the name of the town from the Romanian settlers can be referred to a period after the 16th century.
