Summary/Abstract: The arrival o f some call-porters, missionaries and various Eastern gurus, as well as the return o f the people born in this region from the far-away world in which they have undergone some religious experience, have both caused the emergence o f the religious communities, new for this region, that have taken roots and expanded with varying success. The traditional religions in an atheist society have found themselves in the same position as the new ones; however, in the transition period a religious activity o f religious communities has burgeoned and brought about mutual competition. In this paper special attention is devoted to the research o f diverse religious communities and their attitude toward atheism, dominant religion and sects. The research has been carried out in larger Yugoslav towns by means o f objective observation o f religious service and personal communication pointed out to the necessity of religious tolerance. In all the religions, at the theoretical level, the principle o f respecting others as one respects himself can be recognized; however, at the practical level and o f everyday life, tolerance becomes a measure o f individual maturity of the believers.
