Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on historical aspects and the functionality of a traditional Romanian current instrument — the panflute. Having origins in antiquity, today the panflute is wide-spread all over the world. In the Romanian area, from the Medieval Epoch, the panflute was included in the traditional bands. In the second part of the 20th century the panflute had agreat artistic ascension, due its perfection in construction that revolutionized the art of interpretation on this instrument, and today it has the highest level of virtuosity. Beginning with the 1940s strong traditions of institutional teaching of the panflute were developed. The modernization of this traditional Romanian instrument presents interest for different musicians from different countries.
